Presented by: Tameka Thompson

Tameka Thompson grew up in Chicago Illinois and moved to Milwaukee when she was a sophomore in high school. She is a wife and a mother of six children; 3 daughters and 3 sons ages 21, 16, 16, 14, 13, and 12. Growing up she always liked playing school and her dream was to become an elementary school teacher.

She began working in childcare in 2004. Her first position was as a secretary in the childcare office. Tameka enjoyed the children and the families so much that she decided to take courses so that she could work in the classrooms when needed. She attended 4C’s for introductory courses, and soon after finishing those courses enrolled in Milwaukee Area Technical College in the Teacher Education Program. At the same time, Tameka was taking courses at Kaplan University where she received an Associate’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Tameka continued to take courses to help enhance her understanding of the childcare field. After moving into a permanent classroom teacher position, Tameka discovered that she enjoyed the classroom but also liked the business end of working in a childcare center. She was offered a position of a Child Care Center director and  took on a 2nd job at a center where she had Director duties.

During the next few years, Tameka worked as a director in the evenings while teaching at another program during the day. After three years of working for two programs and going to school part time, she decided it was time to let something go. Tameka left the director positon and continued to be a teacher at her current program until October 2014. She then became the Curriculum Specialist, allowing her to work first hand with the children, teachers and families more as she focuses on making sure all the children in the center are developing appropriately.

In 2014, Tameka received my Administrator Credential. She wanted to gain more knowledge about developing a program of her own so she decided to take the Program Development Credential and completed that in February 0f 2017. She has also completed the After-school credential and began the Leadership Credential.

Over the years, Tameka has gained a greater respect for the Early Childhood Education Field. This field is always changing and adding new and improved regulations and requirements. To ensure that she stays on top of things, she has enrolled in the Community Education and Engagement Degree program at UWM.  She is a member of NAECY, Wisconsin After School Association, and the Childcare registry. She is a Registry approved trainer, as well as a technical consultant. Tameka enjoys attending conferences and participating in continuing education opportunities. This field is truly for her and she plans to continue working to improve her knowledge and understanding of Early Childhood Development. Tameka is also a Shaken Baby syndrome trainer, and most recently completed certification to become a Red Cross approved CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor.
